My Professional Journey: More Than Just A Single Role

 by Jeanette R. Harrison, MPH

Throughout my career in healthcare, I have embraced a variety of roles that have each shaped my perspective, sharpened my skills, and deepened my commitment to the field. It’s sometimes easy for people to associate us with just one job, especially the one we started with. For me, that initial role was as a medical transcriptionist—my first step into healthcare. But since then, I have moved through several meaningful and growth-oriented roles that have expanded my expertise and influence.

Why It’s Important to Acknowledge the Journey

While working as a medical transcriptionist provided a solid foundation, I have not held that title since 2000. Since then, my career has evolved significantly. Here’s a small glimpse into the path I’ve followed.

A Foundation in Leadership and Administration

After gaining initial experience, I took on a healthcare administration internship at one of the leading academic medical centers in the country. This position provided high-level exposure and intensive training in healthcare management. From there, I completed a fellowship in healthcare administration with a focus on executive leadership, specifically designed to prepare leaders for the demands and challenges of a complex industry.

Broadening My Expertise

With a solid foundation in healthcare administration, I transitioned into other critical roles:

  • Data Manager: Leveraging my training, I helped shape healthcare data strategies to drive better patient outcomes and informed decisions.
  • Senior Data Quality Coordinator: I ensured data accuracy and integrity—a crucial responsibility to support safety, compliance, and efficiency in healthcare.
  • Clinical Data Coordinator: Here, my work directly impacted clinical operations by maintaining the highest standards in data quality.
  • Adjunct Faculty Member: In this role, I had the opportunity to teach and mentor future healthcare professionals, contributing to the field’s ongoing development.

Building a Business

Today, I am proud to own my own business, where I offer lifestyle coaching and consulting to empower individuals and organizations. This current chapter combines my experience, my passion for health and wellness, and my desire to make a positive impact.

The Power of Perspective

The healthcare industry—and any professional journey—is rarely defined by one role or title. Every step we take, every position we hold, brings value to the next. It’s easy to distill a person’s story into a single role, but the reality is often much more complex. Recognizing the entirety of a career acknowledges not only growth but also the many contributions made along the way.

A Final Thought

While it’s true I started as a medical transcriptionist, that was only the beginning of a long, diverse, and rewarding career journey in healthcare. I am grateful for each role I’ve had and for the path that has led me to where I am today.
