Easy Health Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are here. Time for laughter, time for cheer, time for trying to stay healthy at least through the New Year. With so much to do, so many places to go, and so many places to see, keeping healthy may seem hard to do this time of year. With these simple tips, you may be able to promote your own healthfulness.

1. Wash Your Hands! It's no mistake that the number one tip to staying healthy and preventing the spread of illness is to wash your hands! Washing your hands can stop the spread of bacteria, viruses, and other diseases. Washing hands with soap and water is always best. If soap for some reason isn't available (say in a public restroom facility), at least washing your hands with water will remove some of the germs. You may also want to carry hand sanitizer with you in your car, purse, or bag. Washing your hands after using the restroom, before and after eating, before and after preparing food, after touching bodily fluids like mucous or blood, and anytime your hands are visibly dirty will promote health.

2. Take Out The Trash. When parents tell kids to "Take out the trash!" they are doing more than teaching children responsibility by doing chores. The parents are keeping their families healthier. Trash is a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and attracts insects and other vermin.  Trash sitting in the trash can, in the bathroom, or in a bedroom can also have negative health impacts simply by looking at it. Someone could look at the trash and think how it is another chore he/she must do, which increases stress. Reduce your stress, keep the bugs out, and keep your home cleaner by simply taking the trash out...just like your parents taught you to.

3. Clean The Handles. When cleaning, many people forget to clean the handles of doors, cabinets, refrigerators, even their cars. However, if you think about how many times a day you touch a handle after eating, using the bathroom, or sneezing, you may be more likely to wipe off those handles! Germs and viruses can live on handles for up a to a week. Plus, who wants to stick their hand in something icky or sticky, not knowing what it is! Be kind to yourself and your holiday guests. At least once a week, clean the handles with some sort of disinfecting wipe. This may prevent you from reinfecting yourself or someone in your family in case one of you does get one of those nasty holiday colds.

4. Get Some Exercise. The holidays are a time for hustle and bustle, more bustling than hustling. Let's face it. The holidays are a stressful time, and a great way to combat that stress is through exercise. With all of the extra events during the holidays, sometimes it isn't easy to get in your regular exercise routine. If you can't fit it in, maybe you can try to exercise for 10 or 15 minutes at a stretch. Instead of sitting during your favorite half-hour television show, perhaps you can stand up and walk in place. You may even want to have a living room dance show, or a "who can go up and down the stairs the most times" competition. You can even do sitting exercises, marching your feet while sitting or lifting your arms in sets of ten. Whatever it is, try to stay active. Doing something is always better than doing nothing.

5. Get Plenty of Rest. This is an important one. Sleep can actually improve your mood and reduce your risk for other health problems. By getting plenty of rest, you will not feel tired and stressed every morning when you wake up. When you feel alert and awake, you are less likely to get upset about small things and able to think clearer. Also, when you get tired, you become more susceptible to illnesses. Like anything, the best illness defense is a good offense. You can make sleep a part of your regular healthy offensive line-up. Multiple studies have shown the average adult needs between seven to nine hours of sleep every night. That is all at once, not broken up. Even laying in bed for seven to nine hours is better than not resting at all.
